Participant Reflection Process (From BWO South Australia)

We encourage participants to draw lessons from their experiences of serving in the community, this is through action/reflection learning processes:

“Action/reflection is a common way of learning in much of human living. We learn from experience. Well, not exactly. We learn when we reflect on our experience and draw lessons from it – a process that may well need the empathetic support of someone we trust. This is what good supervision seeks to provide with the primary aim to support the person growing as a person in ministry. The emphasis then is on helping the person unpack their ministry experiences and work towards their learning goals/objectives. Effective supervision does not produce a clone of the Supervisor. ‘It enables the person to move towards that uniqueness under God which individual gifts and graces imply and make possible.’” [extract from SABU SFE General Handbook]

Such a process is facilitated through helping students and leaders reflect on their experiences by asking reflective questions such as:

  • “what did you value about this time?”
  • “what did you learn about yourself?”
  • “what did you find great/hard?”
  • “Where do you think Jesus might have wanted you to be?”
  • “Where do you think God was present?”
  • Where do you think you missed the mark?”

The Service Event leader, the Small Group leader and Youth leaders are important in this instigating this process. We would also ask leaders to facilitate this process amongst themselves in briefing and debriefing times.
