X Factor Youth from Diamond Valley Baptist hard at work in their community.
Start planning for Urban Summer 2012!
It is time to start preparing for Urban Summer ’12, if you haven’t already! Urban Summer will run in 2012 from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th of January. The Friday is the day that we will be having a corporate gathering starting at 9am (going into the bush fire effected areas to help families continue to rebuild) and then running a night event in the evening at Diamond Valley Baptist Church.
Please note that Thursday the 26th is Australia Day. We traditionally use that day to have the parents of the young people come along.

Participant Reflection Process (From BWO South Australia)
We encourage participants to draw lessons from their experiences of serving in the community, this is through action/reflection learning processes:
“Action/reflection is a common way of learning in much of human living. We learn from experience. Well, not exactly. We learn when we reflect on our experience and draw lessons from it – a process that may well need the empathetic support of someone we trust. This is what good supervision seeks to provide with the primary aim to support the person growing as a person in ministry. The emphasis then is on helping the person unpack their ministry experiences and work towards their learning goals/objectives. Effective supervision does not produce a clone of the Supervisor. ‘It enables the person to move towards that uniqueness under God which individual gifts and graces imply and make possible.’” [extract from SABU SFE General Handbook]
Such a process is facilitated through helping students and leaders reflect on their experiences by asking reflective questions such as:
- “what did you value about this time?”
- “what did you learn about yourself?”
- “what did you find great/hard?”
- “Where do you think Jesus might have wanted you to be?”
- “Where do you think God was present?”
- Where do you think you missed the mark?”
The Service Event leader, the Small Group leader and Youth leaders are important in this instigating this process. We would also ask leaders to facilitate this process amongst themselves in briefing and debriefing times.
